May brought the Hill Country hotter temperatures and very little rain. River flows have fallen making many rivers difficult to do float trips in the big rafts. The one mainstay during drought conditions is the San Marcos river. The San Marcos has always fished best the hotter the temperatures and lower the water levels. As temperatures rise and levels fall, fish concentrate in the moving water and along the steep, riverbend walls making them easier to target. If drought conditions remain, the San Marcos will a good and best option for raft float trips.

San Marcos River

Flows, clarity, and all conditions are great on the San Marcos. The river has always fished best the hotter the temps and lower the water levels. Even in the worst of recent drought conditions the San Marcos maintained flows good enough to do float trips. The warmer water and lower flows concentrates the fish in the moving water. We have been focusing on sections from Staples to Luling that receive little pressure.

Early June Flows in Martindale: 261 cfs

Upper Guadalupe River

Flows have begun to be too low on the Upper for float trips. Doing a kayak/wade trip is a great way to attack the Upper Guadalupe. Like the San Marcos, the fish will be more concentrated and found in deep pockets on the bank or in the moving water. The fish may be a little spookier as water clarity is crystal.

Early June Flows in Comfort: 52 cfs

Medina River

Despite its size and low flow, the Medina is a great river to wade fish. Multiple bridge crossing provide access especially above and around the town of Medina. The water is crystal and the fish spooky but with a little stealth you can find yourself sight casting to some relatively large fish. Streamers are the best option with a light presentation.
